First Meeting

First meeting of the quarter is TOMORROW NIGHT in Campbell 2122 at 6pm! Get to know the board as well as your fellow BLing members, play ling games, and hear about our upcoming social events!

World Languages Day

Be sure to check out World Languages Day, Friday Sept. 23rd from 10am to 2pm in Bruin Plaza:

World Languages Day is an event promoting the various language clubs and departments on campus. Many different language departments – as well as Linguistics, the Dashew Center, and EAP – will be in attendance.

Participants will be given a ‘passport’ and encouraged to visit all of the different tables, as well as learn something new at each. Holders of completed “passports” may be eligible for a drawing.

It will be a great event especially for those new to the Linguistics major at UCLA, as it will be a fun way to be introduced to basic Ling concepts and get excited about the major in general.

LaTeX for linguists

Here are a couple links of useful pages for learning LaTeX as a linguist. If you know some basics (or even if you don’t), take a look for some tips on typesetting.

Winter quarter 2011 update

BLing is getting ready for some exciting things, general meetings, socials, and most of all SCULC! Here’s a rundown of the things you should be looking out for:

  • General Meetings: If you missed the last meeting where we discussed the hows and whats of graduate school, come to our next meetings to chat with our members. The meetings remaining in the quarter are scheduled for February 23 and March 9, at the same time and place, 6pm in Campbell 2122.
  • 2011 Shirts: We’re spending extra time putting together a BLing-exclusive design. All of our previous shirts have been designed by collaboration with members, so its not to late to get involved by coming to a meeting and sharing your creative ideas. Look for shirt announcements soon and order fast—we only order a limited quantity.
  • Socials: We’re looking forward to putting together a joint social with USC’s linguistics student group, USIL, to meet and greet other high-achieving linguistics students.
  • And finally:
  • SCULC 2011

    SCULC 2011

  • Ready? SCULC 2011 is coming soon, scheduled for April 9, at the UCLA campus. Details coming soon, but the abstract deadline is soon—March 1. All registered undergrad (and graduate) students are encouraged to present their works on language, linguistics, TESL, anthropology, or any field related to language or language study. Check the official website for details: http://bruinling.org/sculc.
